There is a job opening at the New York State Psychiatric Institute (across the street from Columbia University) for a junior vet that could be filled by someone right out of vet school who has substantial experience in lab animal from vet school. The job is posted on the ASLAP website. The job is not a residency, but does offer the option of working with the residents at Columbia if the person is interesting in self-teaching to sit the boards. I think the position will be under the direction of Evan Shukan (our old adviser).

CLINICAL LABORATORY ANIMAL VETERINARIAN
The opportunity: The Department of Comparative Medical Science of the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI), New York, NY, has an immediate faculty opening for; a clinical veterinarian. The successful candidate will provide clinical care for a thriving, AAALAC-accredited animal facility. The position involves close collaboration with NYSPI scientists and with the nearby Institute of Comparative Medicine at Columbia University. The position reports to the Director of the CMS at NYSPI.
The Institution: The NYSPI is a clinical and basic research institution. Our research mission is to understand the mechanisms of psychiatric disease and develop novel strategies for prevention and treatment. Approximately 375 investigators are engaged in nearly 90 protocols involving transgenic, behavioral, neurophysiological and neuropharmacological studies in a variety of animal models. The central animal care facility occupies an area of 15,000 sq. ft. h d includes two full surgical suites for large animals, as well as surgical and procedural rooms for smaller species. There are several specialized satellite facilities. The staff of the Department of Comparative Medical Science consists of 3 animal care supervisors, 3 veterinary/surgical technicians, 13 caretakers and 2 full-time administrative assistants.
The Responsibilities: The veterinarian will be responsible for the clinical aspects involved in operating a state-of-the-art laboratory animal program. This includes training of staff and investigators, providing clinical care for research animals and assuring their psychological well-being, and the monitoring of research procedures. In addition, the veterinarian will assist the Director with the administrative and regulatory aspects of the animal research program: AAALAC accreditation, USDA and New York State oversight, and the veterinary review of research protocols. The candidate must have a DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA accredited institution or equivalent, and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state in the United States. Training or experience in laboratory animal medicine (with large animals and with a broad range of rodent models) and excellent interpersonal skills are also required. ACLAM, ACVIM, or ACVS board certification or eligibility is desirable for this position. Preferred knowledge and experience also includes prior experience in an academic environment; knowledge and experience in surgical and medical procedures commonly performed in neurobehavioral and biomedical animal research; and familiarity with pertinent laws, regulations and policies governing the use of lab animals.
